Meet Our Originals: Badge of An Original

The Badge Of An Original is the mark of originality at its finest. It’s a mark that represents those who pave their own path and explore new opportunities, passions and experiences. In this blog, we’ll be talking to the Barbour International Originals: game changers who live life true to themselves - paving their own way and sharing an independent spirit.

With that, allow us to introduce motorcycling explorer and stylist, Freddie Dobbs; photographer and content creator, Luke Martin; presenter and motorcycling pro Merry Michau, London-based model Tana and confidence coach Sian Lord.

Freddie Dobbs

Motorcycling explorer and stylist, who sees the road ahead as a path to new and exciting things.

What drew you to motorcycling?

It’s the most accessible, ultimate way to gain your freedom. It’s great value where you're not restricted by traffic and the feeling of adrenaline at a cost per mile rate is untouchable. You don’t have to journey far to experience the thrill, the simple ride to work can give you that feeling of adrenaline and freedom every day.

What have you learned to take with you on the road?

Enjoy the journey. Don’t constantly chase the destination (on a road trip or a goal in life) with the blinkers on. Soak it all in because every moment along the way is important.

What or who has been your greatest teacher in overcoming challenges?

No one specific person, I try to take inspiration from a range of different people. But in general, I find there’s no better way to learn than from your own experiences. Get out there, try, fail, learn and try again.

What do you think of the Barbour International pieces you shot in?

The classic, understated looks and durability of the pieces means they’re versatile and can be worn in many different situations. It’s gear that you’ll keep for a lifetime and you feel very special every time you wear it.

How do you motivate yourself to keep seeking new things?

Knowing that our time is short and every day counts is plenty of motivation.

How do you live in the moment?

Never say no to an interesting opportunity, no matter how daunting it may be, and always be open to a change in direction.

What defines an original? And how do you strive to be an original?

An original chooses their own way and chases their dreams. I try to do what I want to do, instead of what I think I should do.

What motto do you live by?

There’s never a perfect time to start or do anything — just jump in and learn as you go.

Luke Martin

Photographer and content creator, with an eye for detail, who captures the moment through the lens of his camera.

What drew you to photography?

In 2017 my partner and I travelled around Asia for just short of a year. We both had point and shoot cameras with one zoom lens and no idea how to use them. By the end of our travels, we had established a good basic knowledge and were eager to learn more and adapt.

What is it you want people to feel seeing your work?

My main goal is to tell stories through my work — build a narrative around a location or subject that can be interpreted with or without words.

What or who has been your greatest teacher in overcoming challenges?

To be honest, I’d like to say myself, without sounding too arrogant. I think when it comes to a challenge that I really don’t want to do, I tend to close my eyes and leap and see where I land. I’ve taken this trial-and-error approach to many things that scare me and if it doesn’t work out, I learn from my mistakes and move on.

What do you think about Barbour International’s history?

I really appreciate how far Barbour International has come as a brand and yet their design and brand aesthetic has remained the same. From the classic wax jacket created for the 1936 International Six Day Trials, right through to now, it still to this day holds so much esteem and reputation. Barbour International’s jackets have become statement pieces that are instantly recognisable.

What do you think about the Barbour International pieces you shot in?

Ah, I swear by Barbour International for motorcycling jackets. I wore the Duke Waxed Jacket in Sage. When I jump out for a ride, I don’t like to take a lot of gear with me, so having enough pocket space without feeling crowded is a blessing — something the Duke jacket offers in abundance. I’m also a huge fan of the deep sage colour, it’s a very minimal but effective change compared to the average plain black jacket.

What defines an original? And how do you strive to be an original?

An original is someone who just knows what they’re doing or knows what they want to achieve and doesn’t bend to trends or fads. I’d like to think I’m an original, I like to feel that I’m paving a path for myself and my family that suits us and the way we want to live. Not too fast and not too slow, just on the move.

Merry Michau

What drew you to motorcycles?

The love of two wheels came from my family — it’s in the blood.

How has your past influenced you today?

It’s enabled me to recreate visual images today with a nod to what has gone before. It’s something I love bringing out in my work - a nod to the past but that’s brought bang up to date.

What or who has been your greatest teacher in overcoming challenges?

My greatest teacher has been my father — he never treated me any differently to my brother when it came to bikes.

Who are your motorcycling inspirations?

My girlfriends are definitely my motorcycling inspiration. They have had to overcome stigmas to become accepted, valuable members of the motorcycling community over the years.

Tana

A London-based model known for his street style and laid-back cool and attitude.

What drew you to modelling? How did you get into it?

I’ve always loved being in front of the camera, I love the feeling. I remember seeing billboards down on Oxford high street and wishing I was in one, so that really drew me into modelling. I got into it through doing different work with different photographers — this is where I learned that modelling isn’t as easy as I thought it would be.

How has your past influenced you today?

Preparation is key. I’ve got to be prepared to ensure everything at the shoots goes smoothly. This applies outside of modelling as well.

How would you describe your style?

Easy, comfortable, Tana.

What advice would you give to someone still trying to figure out their original style?

Confidence. Your style is what makes you feel confident, so if you feel confident then it’s the right style for you.

What do you think about the Barbour International pieces you shot in?

My favourite piece was the essential hoodie, it’s super comfy. It has a mixture of street and elegant looks in one which I don’t see often.

How do you try to live in the moment?

I try to stay present and involved in the things I do.

What defines an original? And how do you strive to be an original?

Originality is you, and everything about you. So by being true to yourself, you are original.

What motto do you live by?

‘SEF’: simple, easy, fun.

Sian Lord wears the Barbour International AW21 Women's CollectionSian Lord wears the Barbour International AW21 Women's Collection

Sian Lord

Confidence coach, dedicated to helping people overcome their challenges.

How has your past influenced you today?

My past has led me to every single thing I do in my life today. I never imagined when I was studying to be a fashion buyer that I would now be a model and motivational speaker. My passion to educate people on disabilities and fighting for people’s equality all has been influenced by my limb loss.

What or who has been your greatest teacher in overcoming challenges?

I have faced some very difficult challenges in my life, but I have learnt so much along the way. I’ve read so many books on self-development and I just believed in myself enough to apply it to what I was going through. I had the mentality that if others can pull their lives together from their own challenging situations, then I could too.

I was also fortunate to have an amazing mentor whilst I was recovering in hospital from my leg amputation, who really gave me the confidence that all was going to be ok. Also being open and voicing the times when I was really low really helped me, which I don’t think people do enough of.

Who are your greatest inspirations?

I am surrounded by amazing people that inspire me every day for so many different reasons. From being amazing parents and starting up businesses from scratch, to travelling the world, and fighting illnesses — the list goes on.

How did you come into life coaching?

Life coaching for me is what I used to do without even realising it. I would speak most days to not only amputees, but to everyone who was going through a tough time and wanted some guidance over social media. I then wanted to train up properly and advertise that I was happy to help people that needed my advice. I was already a motivational speaker in schools, so I loved to connect with people about how they can get through anything with the right mindset. I love the trust you have between each other, whether that be one on one or an assembly full of students.

What do you think about Barbour International’s history?

I love that Barbour International has kept their same brand identity throughout the decades, it really shows how timeless their designs are and that the brand can keep evolving.

What do you think about the Barbour International pieces you shot in?

I shot in the Garrow Top and International waxed jacket, all amazing basics that can be easily applied to any other outfit. The jacket was my favourite piece, as it just gave all the outfits I tried on with it such an edge in the best possible way.

How do you try to live in the moment?

After my life was nearly cut short back in 2013, I do everything I can to live in the moment. It sounds odd, but I actually don’t believe in 5/10-year plans anymore. I had my whole life planned out, but I learnt the hard way that tomorrow isn’t promised. It’s great to have goals, but don’t be too hard on yourself if those goals change and if they do that’s ok.

What defines an original? And how do you strive to be an original?

For me, what defines an original is having the courage to go after what you love, or trying to find the things you're passionate about without needing any validation or influence from anyone else.
