RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTS

Investing in Better Cotton

Barbour is a proud member of Better Cotton. Better Cotton’s mission is to help cotton communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment. Better Cotton is sourced via a chain of custody model called “mass balance”.  This means that Better Cotton is not physically traceable to end products, however, Better Cotton Farmers benefit from the demand for Better Cotton in equivalent volumes to those we ‘source.’ We are committed to sourcing 95% of our entire cotton as Better Cotton, recycled cotton or organic cotton by 2030.

Leather Working Group

The Leather Working Group (LWG) is a group of brands, retailers, product manufacturers, leather manufacturers, chemical suppliers and technical experts that have worked together to develop an environmental stewardship protocol specifically for the leather manufacturing industry. The group promotes improvement in the leather manufacturing industry by creating alignment on environmental priorities by bringing visibility to best practices and providing guidelines for continual improvement.

Over 70% of our leather is currently sourced through the Leather Working Group and we aim to increase this to 80% by the end of 2022.

WATERPROOF FABRIC

Over 70% of Barbour waterproof fabric materials are sourced from bluesign® approved mills. The bluesign® system guarantees that a fabric has been manufactured in an environmentally conscious way without using hazardous substances.

ANIMAL WELFARE

We use leather and wool in some of our garments and footwear. When using these products, we only source from companies who practice good animal husbandry and respect the Five Freedoms. We do not use real fur, angora, mohair, alpaca, shell, horn or exotic skins in any of our products. Sheep and lamb wool must be sourced from producers with good animal husbandry and we do not use shearing from farms that practice mulesing.

RECYCLED MATERIALS

We are increasingly using recycled materials across all of our ranges including quilts and outerwear. This includes wadding made from pre and post-consumer waste that has been reprocessed.

ORGANIC YARNS

Our certified organic cotton and wool yarns are kinder to the environment because they are made without the use of pesticides and harmful chemicals. The organic wool standard supports better animal welfare standards, ensuring sheep are treated with respect and are fed 100% organic feed.
